About Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn
Bedford-Stuyvesant (colloquially called “Bed-Stuy” or “Stuyford”) is a neighborhood located in the north central portion of Brooklyn. Its name is a combination of the Village of Bedford and Stuyvesant Heights. During the 2000s, this neighborhood began experiencing gentrification. Despite the largest recession to hit the country during the 2010s, gentrification steadily continued, which accelerated due to Bed-Stuy’s affordable living expenses.
Like most of New York’s neighborhoods, Bed-Stuy has its own historic district. The Stuyvesant Heights Historic District consists of 577 residential buildings that were built between 1870 and 1900. These houses were composed of two or three-story rowhouses that had high basements and multiple dwellings. Also, this district is where you can find the Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, and St. Philip’s Episcopal Church.
