About Greenwich Village, NYC
Greenwich Village, or locally known as “the Village”, is located on the west side of Lower Manhattan, New York City. Greenwich Village is known for many things, but before it became an artists’ haven, it was once turned to a pasture by Dutch and freed African settlers in 1630. Back then, the settlement was named Noortwyck (“North district”). But the village’s earliest known reference to “Greenwich” was in 1696 in the will of Yellis Mandeville of Greenwich. The only time “Greenwich Village” was mentioned was in city records that date back to 1713.
Today, Greenwich Village is mentioned in dozens of popular culture, such as comics, film, literature, and music. Greenwich Village is also abundant with points of interest which include Washington Square Park, DeSalvio Playground, and the Grey Art Gallery. Big names like Uma Therman, Alec Baldwin, Anderson Cooper, and Andrew Garfield, have also called Greenwich Village their home.
